As Italy continues scaling up its energy storage infrastructure, the rise of large BESS projects marks a transformative phase in its energy transition.
Currently, the main applications for commercial and industrial storage in Italy are corporate self-use, peak shaving, and backup power. However, if future policies allow for its participation in the dispatchable market, the market is expected to expand further.
Italy's environment and energy ministry has approved six utility-scale battery storage projects in Lazio, Campania, Basilicata and Puglia. From ESS News A decree issued on Aug. 7, 2025, authorized a 120 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) developed by BESS Sessa.
Focusing on RtB BESS, according to transaction platform nTeaser, prices have followed a downward trajectory from 2025 into the first quarter of 2026. "In the fourth quarter of 2025, values ranged from €19,500/MW to €55,000/MW, with a median of €44,000/MW," the firm notes.
The Brindisi facility will primarily target the stationary energy storage market, using a water-based process. It is currently in the engineering phase, with economic, financial, and authorisation assessments due to be wrapped up by the first quarter of 2026, ahead of the execution.
Google is working with a Milan-based company called Energy Dome, which has built a model facility in Ottana, Sardinia, Italy, that is storing 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide generated from a gas supplier. As part of the partnership, Google has made an equity investment in Energy.
